Why Suns star is likely to be dealt and who’s in the running to land former MVP

If the Phoenix Suns had their way, they would have traded Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors at the deadline. He ultimately squashed that deal and stayed put for the rest of the season, but from there, the die was cast. Once you’ve tried to trade a top-20 player of all time without his knowledge or consent, the relationship is generally broken beyond repair.

Maybe a reconciliation here is possible, but would it be advisable? The Suns have now gone through two-and-a-half years with Durant in place, and they’ve gotten worse in each of them. They lost a six-game, second-round war to Denver in 2023, got swept by Minnesota in the first round in 2024, and then missed the postseason altogether this season. The Suns, in their current state, are not worth preserving. Bradley Beal has a no-trade clause, so Phoenix can’t count on using him to improve. The Suns probably should consider moving Devin Booker and beginning a full rebuild, but owner Mat Ishbia has said on the record that it will “never happen.”

Phoenix has no role players that are especially desirable on the trade market. There isn’t any exciting youth. They’re out of their own first-round picks to trade, leaving them with only two heavily protected ones they picked up in a disastrous deadline swap with the Jazz. Durant is the only pathway they have to any major change.

NBA trade rumors: Kevin Durant, Spurs had mutual interest at trade deadline; Clippers eyeing Jrue Holiday?
So with the trade market likely to kick into gear in the coming weeks, let’s scope out the Durant market. What do we know? What are the Suns looking for? And what teams might consider a run at the 2014 MVP?

Phoenix is trading Durant … right?
The consensus after the deadline was that yes, Phoenix will, in fact, trade Durant. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said so emphatically in March. The reporting at the end of the season mostly echoed that belief. While Ishbia himself did not directly say that Durant would move, he did tell ESPN that the Suns might need to “pivot and reload” around Booker, the long-term franchise player.

Interestingly, little reporting has come of late, even with the majority of the NBA now eliminated and in offseason mode. There has been no reporting hinting at meetings between Durant and the team, as there have been for Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. For now, nothing has contradicted either the in-season reporting or the common sense here. It seems as though the bridge has been burned here, and Phoenix has no other way of significantly changing its team. We should assume a trade is happening, but we’re not quite at the point where we can treat that as fact.

What do the Suns want out of a Durant trade?
… Everything? Really think about what the Suns gave up to get Durant. They traded four first-round picks directly, and then Mikal Bridges, who was also in the trade, netted five in a follow-up trade with the Knicks. Factor in the reality that Cam Johnson is also worth one the moment Brooklyn decides to trade him, and Phoenix gave up double-digit first-round pick value to bring Durant to Phoenix.

The Arizona Republic’s Duane Rankin reported in March that Phoenix would look for three first-round picks and a young player in a possible Durant deal. That’s probably pretty ambitious for a 37-year-old, and while young players will be important in the rebuilding effort around Booker, it’s worth asking whether or not draft picks should be a priority here. If Phoenix does intend to reload around Booker, specifically, those picks probably aren’t going to do him much good. Booker will turn 29 around opening night. He’s probably got a few more years in his prime. Adding a rookie in 2028 isn’t going to be helpful. Picks make more sense in a world in which Booker is also moved and a total rebuild begins, unless they’re planning to reroute those picks for players.

If the plan here is to win around Booker in the next few years, there are two viable paths a deal like this could take. The simplest would be to trade Durant for three or four cheaper role players that do different things. Phoenix needs a bit of everything right about now: rim-protection, perimeter defense, playmaking, a guard that can pressure the rim, pick your poison. Teams that can offer them several of these things would be appealing.

The alternative would be to swap Durant for a similarly expensive, older player at a different position just to balance out the Phoenix roster. Don’t rule this possibility out. Keeping stars happy usually means surrounding them with other stars. If someone wants to give Booker a running mate that has a different skill set, that would probably appeal to both him and the Suns.

What does Durant want out of a trade?
This is a harder question. All Durant has really said, back in February in an appearance on the Draymond Green Show, was “I want my career to end on my terms. That’s the only thing.” Durant is 37 years old. He’s also on an expiring contract. If he doesn’t want to go somewhere, he has more than enough leverage to axe a deal. We know that because he’s already done it. The question then becomes, where will he want to go?

We don’t know that yet. We can probably rule out Golden State, considering what happened at the deadline. A return to Oklahoma City probably isn’t in the cards either. In a 2019 interview with The Wall Street Journal’s J.R. Moehringer, he said he experienced a “venomous, toxic feeling” when he originally returned to Oklahoma City as a member of the Warriors, citing the cold-shoulder treatment he received from staffers with his old team. This would have only made sense if the Thunder had been eliminated by now anyway.

In past moves, Durant has emphasized partnering up with scoring guards. His 2016 free agency led him to Stephen Curry. He linked up with Kyrie Irving and James Harden in Brooklyn after that, and when he wanted to leave the Nets, he targeted Booker’s Suns. At this stage of his career, Durant probably needs to play with a high-level shot-creator in the backcourt. He isn’t the same player he once was. He doesn’t really get to the rim anymore, and he’s never been an elite playmaker. If there are players that he has preexisting relationships with, that might help. Among players he hasn’t played with, Anthony Edwards stands out here, as Edwards idolized Durant growing up and they played together on Team USA last summer.

But, realistically, a lot of this is probably getting decided behind closed doors right now. Durant is probably speaking to players around the league and figuring out who he wants to play with. If he is indeed going to end his career on his terms, that’s going to mean trying to pick his destination himself. Without knowing what sort of team he’s looking for, we can’t accurately guess what a deal would look like. However, there are a handful of teams that make sense.

So, who’s in the running here?
Durant isn’t Giannis Antetokounmpo. He’s not an MVP candidate with a long runway ahead of him. His age and expiring contract make him less appealing as a trade candidate than he was a few years ago, but that also widens the pool of teams that could plausibly add him significantly. He’s gettable at a reasonable price.

In April, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that there was mutual interest between Durant and five teams at the deadline. Those teams were the Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat and Houston Rockets. Any of them could plausibly be suitors again this offseason. On deadline day, Bob Myers said on ESPN that the Grizzlies tried to land Durant but that he turned them away. Perhaps he’d be open-minded about them this offseason.

Those would probably be the likeliest teams to ask. They won’t be the only ones. Could Golden State return to the well? Phoenix was trying to use Durant to land Jimmy Butler at the deadline. The Warriors have Butler to trade. The Dallas Mavericks are far less likely to make a major trade for an older player now that they’ve won Cooper Flagg, but the thought of a team built around Flagg, Durant, Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving in the short term would surely be appealing. Keep an eye on the middle of the Eastern Conference. Teams like Detroit and Orlando probably see an opportunity with the Celtics likely out of commission next season. Maybe one of them takes a bold swing.

Durant is perhaps the most portable superstar in NBA history. Even now, he is perhaps the most difficult shotmaker in the NBA. He could fit onto any team, and most teams could afford him. Expect a lot of interest from around the league, but ultimately, Durant’s preferences are probably going to swing things in one team’s favor.

Pelicans star Zion Williamson named in rape lawsuit alleging abuse that began at Duke, court documents show

New Orleans Pelicans star and former No. 1 overall pick Zion Williamson has been accused of rape and emotional abuse according to a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court and obtained by ESPN. Williamson’s female accuser, identified as “Jane Doe” according to documents, alleges Williamson put her through a “continued pattern of abusive, controlling and threatening behavior” over a five-year relationship that began during the former five-star’s career at Duke.

The Pelicans have yet to comment on the lawsuit involving their franchise player. The 12-page legal complaint alleges abuse across multiple states.

“We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness, and we unequivocally deny them,” Williamson’s attorneys at Barrasso Usdin Kupperman Freeman & Sarver, L.L.C. said in a statement. “The allegations contained in the complaint are categorically false and reckless. This appears to be an attempt to exploit a professional athlete driven by a financial motive rather than any legitimate grievance.

“While these allegations are false, we recognize the seriousness of the claims and welcome the opportunity to prove the truth in court. We are confident that the legal process will expose the truth and fully vindicate Mr. Williamson.”

Williamson averaged 24.6 points per game and 7.2 rebounds this season, which was cut several weeks short due to a back injury. Williamson served a one-game suspension earlier this season after “failing to meet team standards,” according to the Pelicans.

At the time, Shams Charania reported Williamson missed a team flight while Chris Haynes further detailed that the power forward was late for multiple practices throughout the season.

“This one-game suspension is a result of failing to meet our team standards,” David Griffin, the Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations, said in a statement. “His dedication to this organization is of paramount significance to us and to him. He has taken accountability for his actions and reaffirmed that commitment to the team today. I’m confident he will continue to evolve positively on and off the floor.”

Williamson started the season on the injured list with a hamstring situation and has battled conditioning issues for the duration of his career.

“I take full responsibility for this suspension,” Williamson said at the time of his punishment. “I’ve worked extremely hard in rehab to get healthy to deliver for this team. There is no excuse for being late to team activities. I have apologized to Mrs. Benson and my teammates and coaches and I also owe an apology to the fans. I can and will be better as a teammate and member of this organization.”

Can Lakers win title with Luka Doncic and LeBron? James’ ex-teammate questions odds with aging star

Former Los Angeles Lakers guard Danny Green, one of only four players to win an NBA championship with three different teams, was polite as possible this week when questioning the direction of the franchise moving forward with LeBron James at the helm.

James, who has a player-option this summer and hasn’t yet made his decision, is better off elsewhere if the Lakers intend on winning a title in the near future with Luka Doncic to build around, according to Green.

“I think they’re explosive offensively, (but) I think they lack a lot defensively,” Green said this week on “All The Smoke” podcast. “I don’t know how many years he (James) has left longer, and it’s just really hard to win a championship when your best player is 40 years old. Next year, LeBron going to be 41. He can still average 30, 20-something [points] but I just don’t see them winning a championship with that formula right now.”

James is on a two-year, $104 million contract, but his player option ahead of the 2025-26 season means the four-time NBA champion could opt out. He remained efficient as one of the league’s top players this season, averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game, but postseason success hasn’t been in the cards for the Lakers with James since the franchise won the NBA title during the 2020 bubble. Los Angeles has been one and done in the first round three of its last four trips to the playoffs and failed to show defensive intensity under first-year coach J.J. Redick this season.

The Lakers have +1700 odds on 2025-26 title futures, per DraftKings, putting them in the bottom half of team chances.

Green first played alongside James with the Cleveland Cavaliers before teaming back up with one of the greatest players of all-time in Los Angeles, which included the pair’s title a few years ago.

Green admitted there was considerable pressure playing with James but cherishes the experiences he’s had learning from the four-time MVP and former No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 NBA Draft.

“There are times where it’s not as easy because there’s so much pressure, even if you’re wide open, to execute the play because you’re playing with LeBron James,” Green said. “And that’s more so on the outside than it is on the inside because (LeBron) ain’t putting the pressure on you.

“But all the LeBron fans are like, ‘Who’s this bum? Why is he playing with — he can’t make a damn shot.’ You know what I’m saying? So, it’s a gift and a curse, but he made the game easy, man. And it was a lot of fun learning from him early on, a lot of fun playing against him, and then even better to play with him, and then it was the bubble, but winning the championship with him. It was great, man, so I couldn’t ask for a better scenario.”

Knicks’ Landry Shamet shows why Tom Thibodeau should trust his bench more in East finals against Pacers

There was 9:30 left in the fourth quarter in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals when a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd began chanting “Landry Shamet” with the New York Knicks up 17 points against the Indiana Pacers Thursday night. Shamet just forced a Pacers turnover after stonewalling TJ McConnell underneath the basket as the Pacers guard was trying to generate some offense for Indiana.

McConnell got the angle on Shamet to drive to the rim, but the Knicks guard recovered perfectly to wall off any opportunity to get a shot off. McConnell tried to find a teammate to pass it off to, but Shamet’s presence forced the usually savvy Indiana guard into fumbling the ball out of bounds. Shamet played up to the crowd like he was a WWE performer, and the fans showed love back by showering him with an ovation and loud chants.

“I love New York, I love these fans,” Shamet said of the appreciation shown by the home crowd. “I’ve seen how they ride the wave with us — the highs, the lows. So it’s just important for me. I just want to give everything I’ve got to them. So I appreciate it, but we’ve got more to do.”

It was the perfect highlight to explain Shamet’s performance in Game 5, which the Knicks won 111-94. He played 14 minutes, which was the most run he’s gotten in the postseason thus far. While his stats don’t jump off the page — five points, one rebound, one steal on 2 of 3 from the floor — his impact was certainly felt, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

In the previous four games of this series, the Knicks struggled to slow the Pacers and lacked the level of physicality that we saw from them against the Celtics. That changed Thursday night on a team-wide scale, and for Shamet, he immediately checked into the game and made the Pacers work for their points.

On one possession, he denied Pascal Siakam from trying to post him up, and even after Siakam secured the offensive board, Shamet still didn’t get overpowered by Siakam’s size, resulting in him having to pass out of the play.

Later in the second quarter, Shamet applied ball pressure on Bennedict Mathurin, which almost resulted in a turnover. A few minutes later, he followed that up by putting on a fundamental masterclass on fighting over screens, staying connected to the person you’re defending and moving your feet when guarding in space.

“It talks to the professionalism [Landry Shamet and Delon Wright] have, to be ready for the moment,” Karl-Anthony Towns said. “They did a great job. Every single day, we see them working. We see them always being ready for us, so if we ever need them, they can come in and impact the game. This series has shown their professionalism, their character and I hope the whole world and fans recognize it.”

Under coach Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks have historically run with a short rotation. There’s always commentary — some of which is warranted — about Thibodeau relying too much on his starting unit and not trusting the bench players. The Knicks finished the regular season with two players ranked in the top five of minutes played (Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges), with OG Anunoby and Jalen Brunson both in the top 20.

That unwillingness to go to the bench unit has reared its ugly head on more than one occasion for the Knicks throughout the playoffs. And against the Pacers, who heavily rely on their depth, it’s been apparent how much New York is lacking in that regard. But Thibodeau has shown confidence in Shamet and Wright over the last two games, and it’s been an important development in this series. And it wasn’t just the defense, though that was the most important takeaway from Shamet’s playing time. He also knocked down some well-timed buckets to stifle any comeback from the Pacers. The 3-pointer Shamet converted midway through the second quarter was the start of an 8-0 scoring run the Knicks used to increase the lead to double digits.

We’ve seen in the past how impactful Shamet’s 3-point shooting can be in the playoffs, and now that it seems as though he’s gotten a vote of confidence from Thibodeau, perhaps we’ll see his role expand even more in Game 6.

Timberwolves’ Chris Finch wants Anthony Edwards to get to foul line more next season

The Minnesota Timberwolves will be watching the NBA Finals from home after losing in five games to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals. For the most part, it wasn’t a particularly close series, but it gives Minnesota a road map on how to get better for next season to try and get back to this point again.

From a roster standpoint, the Wolves have massive decisions to make, as Nickeil Alexander-Walker is an unrestricted free agent, while Julius Randle and Naz Reid both have player options before becoming free agents next summer. It’s going to be an expensive summer for Minnesota as it tries to figure out how to construct this roster to be better than it was this season. Despite falling short of winning a title this season, there’s still going to be high expectations next season, and Wolves coach Chris Finch is already laying out what he wants to see his star player improve on for next year.

“For areas of improvement for him, just going to be along the think the game route,” Finch said. “I think he’s got to also figure out a bit of a closing package, we have to help him there. What shots and places on the floor can he repeatedly get to. Foul drawing, I think you see right now in the league, you see what gets rewarded. You need to kind of lean into that a little bit, even though it’s not necessarily how he likes to play. But it seems to be effective.”

Brad Botkin
2025 NBA Finals schedule, Thunder vs. Pacers odds: Dates, game times, TV coverage, NBA playoffs live stream
Part of Finch’s response feels like some residual frustration from that series against Oklahoma City. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was continuously called a free throw merchant, and the officiating was visibly upsetting the Wolves. SGA is one of the best players at getting to the free throw line, and while it may not always be warranted, the issue isn’t that he foul baits, because quite frankly there’s a handful of players in the league who do the same thing. The issue is that it’s being rewarded by the officials, and that’s probably at the crux of Finch’s subtle complaint.

Edwards may not get to the line like SGA, but he attempted the fifth-most free throws this season. A big part of Edwards’ game is getting downhill and getting to the rim, which naturally creates contact, though he’s usually barreling his way to the rim for a highlight dunk. Edwards isn’t methodically trying to get a foul call like Gilgeous-Alexander does, and while that may be criticized, it’s a high IQ tool to have in your arsenal. And unless the league changes some rules this offseason to reel in some of that foul baiting, it seems like Finch’s message to his star guard is if you can’t beat them, join them.

One half of the NBA Finals is set with the Oklahoma City Thunder advancing to the final round of the playoffs after winning the Western Conference Finals. Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers are one win away from joining them, but first they’ll need to close out the Eastern Conference Finals and defeat Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks. How to bet on the NBA
Using your phone, tablet or computer for sportsbooks like FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Fanatics, bet365 or Caesars, you can place bets on these two series, specific games or even prop wagers. Here are some different NBA wagers you can make for the Conference Finals.

Money line: This is choosing which team will win the game.
Spread: You are backing a team based on the margin of victory. For example, backing a team at -5.5 would mean that team, who is favored, has to win by six or more to cover. Backing a team at +5.5 would mean that team needs to lose by five or fewer points or win the game.
Over/Under: Here, you pick whether the two teams will combine to go Over or Under a projected line. If the total is set at 222.5, an Over finish would be 223 or more combined points, while the Under would be 222 or fewer.
Props: Prop wagers are often tied to players’ stat lines, such as how many points or rebounds — or both — they will have. There are other props, such as total points scored in the first half.
Parlay: A parlay is combining multiple bets into one slip to multiply your potential payout. If one leg of the parlay fails, the whole ticket fails.
Live betting: Odds change during games, and live betting is placing a wager after the game has begun.

Betting on Knicks vs. Pacers Game 6 tonight
The Knicks were able to stave off elimination Thursday night with a 111-94 win over the Pacers at home. That was New York’s first home win of the series after dropping Games 1 and 2 at Madison Square Garden. Jalen Brunson once again led the way for the Knicks, dropping 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting, including making four of seven from 3-point range. Karl-Anthony Towns recorded a double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds in the Knicks’ Game 5 win.

On the other side, Indiana had next to nothing going offensively. Bench player Bennedict Mathurin led all Pacers with 23 points, while Pascal Siakam was the only Indiana starter to score more than 10 points. Tyrese Haliburton scored just 8 in a losing effort.

The series now shifts back to Indiana, where the Pacers have the ability to close out this series and earn a date with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. The Thunder are -750 to win it all, per FanDuel odds. The Pacers are -370 to advance past the Knicks, as they have two chances to win a single game and advance, and they’re -176 money line favorites for Saturday’s game.

Knicks-Pacers Eastern Conference Finals Game 6
Thanks in large part to taking Games 1 and 2 in New York, the Pacers need just a single win to advance to the NBA Finals against the Thunder. Indiana had a chance to close things out in Game 5, but the Knicks won 111-94 thanks to 32 points from Jalen Brunson and a double-double from Karl-Anthony Towns. Indiana had just one starter, Pascal Siakam, score in the double digits, as star Tyrese Haliburton had a rough game with just 8 points.

The series now returns to Indiana for Game 6. The Knicks won Game 3 in Indiana, and the Pacers won Game 4 in front of their home crowd. If the Knicks can get another road win, they would not only force Game 7 but also bring the series back to New York at Madison Square Garden.

The Pacers are -180 money-line favorites (wager $180 to win $100) at bet365, while the Knicks are +150 (wager $100 to win $150) underdogs. If you’re interested in learning more about betting on NBA games, check out our NBA betting guide.

The New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers are meeting once again in the NBA playoffs, and this time, there is a Finals berth on the line. The Knicks kept their season alive Thursday night, winning Game 5 at Madison Square Garden with 32 points from Jalen Brunson and a strong defensive showing.

The Pacers got here by knocking out both the Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers in five games. Indiana beat the Knicks in the second round last season to make the Eastern Conference finals, where they got swept by the Celtics.

If Pacers can’t close out Knicks in Game 6, what do odds say about their Game 7 chances in New York?

If Pacers can’t close out Knicks in Game 6, what do odds say about their Game 7 chances in New York?
The Knicks are in the East finals for the first time since 2000 after knocking out the reigning champion Boston Celtics in the second round in six games. The Knicks also ousted the Detroit Pistons in six games in the first round, and Brunson has been phenomenal throughout the playoffs.

The Pacers have not been to the NBA Finals since 2000, when they beat the Knicks in the East finals to get there. The Knicks have not been to the NBA Finals since 1999 … and, of course, they beat the Pacers in the East finals to get there.

Below is the complete schedule for the Eastern Conference finals.

Knicks vs. Pacers: Game 6 best bet
As a general rule, team-wide offense becomes harder and harder to come by as a playoff series progresses. Your opponent becomes familiar with your tendencies and play calls. At that point, individual scoring ability becomes paramount. Obviously, this has been present for the Knicks all series. Their offense is built around the individual brilliance of Jalen Brunson. But I want to point to something that’s happened for Indiana as the series has progressed: Bennedict Mathurin scored nine points in Game 1. He scored two combined in Games 2 and 3. And now he’s scored 43 total in Games 4 and 5. New York’s defense is starting to get a bit more comfortable with Indiana’s pace and passing. A lot of the easy buckets they found early in the series are starting to get harder. So Maturhin’s ability to generate his own offense has become more important than ever, and I expect it to remain important in Game 6. Mathurin played 24 minutes in Game 5, his most of the series, and I think he’ll be a key bench piece in Game 6 as well. The Pick: Mathurin Over 9.5 Points
